Cooking Light
So tonight was another night of photo fun. Well "fun". I'm somewhat frustrated at my attempts to do the first assignment for Lighting 102.

The assignment tonight was Cooking Light. The goal was to photograph a kitchen utensil and turn the object into a piece of art.

very frustrated at my ability compared to some of the other submissions.

I ended up submitting this:

Strobist Lighting 102: Assignment - Cooking Light

It's a pampered chef crinkle cut knife. I could probably do better, but after 3 hours of different shots (over 150 in total) I was exhausted.

I liked the shot you chose.. I think the last few had real potential too — but you need to think of light as something you “paint with” :)

Yeah. I'm slowly getting there. That's the point of these exercises. :-)

I'm just frustrated because it's not happening faster. ;-)

well, I think it's happening quite fast - :) you're developing a style quite quickly - I'm enjoying watching your work progress!

Thanks!

I have another dozen or so photos that will be up in a bit from my flickr meetup today and a walk afterwards.

I don't have anything technical to offer, but here's what I thought:

Looking at your images, and the others', I have a personal preference for some kind of texture in the background - the wooden tabletop in your last image, for example. The one exception is someone's rabbit cookie cutter.. the light in that makes the steel come alive, and it stands on its own.

Showing the item with something upon which it has been or could be used is almost always appealing. Carrots came to mind with the crinkle cutter, but I couldn't figure out what color light or background would go well with orange... maybe cucumbers instead.

The composition of the last shot is excellent - that's something I'd expect to see in a cooking magazine.

All in all, very cool to see what you came up with - it's rare these days to get to see someone's learning process, as our society places such a strong emphasis on "perfect results only".
